Can I safely stop drinking at home, how long does withdrawal last, and which symptoms need urgent help?

Alcohol withdrawal, honestly: the timeline, the symptoms that need urgent care, why heavy daily drinkers must not stop cold alone.

This page is the one place on Sober Path where we’re blunt, because the risk is physical: for heavy daily drinkers, stopping suddenly and alone can be dangerous.

Can I stop at home?

If your drinking is lighter or not daily, many people reduce or stop with support and no medical drama. If you drink daily and heavily, or you’ve had withdrawal symptoms before — shakes in the morning, sweats, a racing heart — do not stop cold on your own. HealthLink BC’s page lays out why: withdrawal can progress to seizures and, in severe cases, delirium. A doctor, nurse practitioner or walk-in clinic can arrange a medically supported withdrawal — at home with medication and check-ins, or in a detox setting. Ten minutes with a clinician is the difference.

How long does it last?

HealthLink BC describes the usual course: symptoms typically begin within hours of the last drink, peak in the first days, and the physical phase eases over about a week — with sleep and mood taking longer to settle. Severe withdrawal is a medical emergency, not a phase to push through.

Symptoms that need urgent help

Confusion or hallucinations, a seizure, severe shaking, a fast heart with chest pain, vomiting that won’t stop, or a fever alongside any of these: call 911.

After the first week

Canada’s 2023 guideline on high-risk drinking (summarized by CAMH) recommends treatment beyond detox — counselling, and for many people, medication that reduces cravings. Detox alone is a beginning, not a plan. Withdrawal management is publicly funded in every province; the provincial lines route you to it, and rapid-access clinics can start medication quickly.
